01 · About Symolem

Sustainability advice built to hold up under scrutiny

Founded in 2022, Symolem is an independent advisory in textiles circularity, sustainability, climate, impact and policy.

We work with fashion and textiles brands navigating regulatory change, with organisations measuring real-world impact, and with clients across the circular economy who need strategies and systems that stand up to regulators and investors alike. Our specialist focus is ESPR and Digital Product Passport readiness for brands, manufacturers and retailers preparing for EU Regulation 2024/1781.

Our work is organised around the START framework — Standards, Transparency, Accountability, Responsibility and Transition — running from compliance and risk mapping, through Digital Product Passport strategy and impact measurement, to policy advisory and behaviour change. Clients and partners we've worked with include the Zayed Sustainability Prize, ClimatePartner, Landfills2Landmarks and Viridios Capital.

Symolem trades as Symolem Limited, registered in England & Wales, based at the PSP Innovation Centre, Porton Down Science Park, Salisbury, Wiltshire.

02 · About the founder

Advice from someone who has stood inside the industry it will transform

Lavinia Fernandes · Founder, Symolem

Symolem was founded by Lavinia Fernandes, who brings nearly two decades at the heart of global luxury fashion to one of the industry's most urgent challenges: making supply chains transparent.

Lavinia held senior roles in luxury retail and e-commerce, including at Stylebop.com and Al-Ostoura, giving her a close view of how fashion moves from production to the customer — and where its real costs stay hidden. She later moved into sustainability and carbon markets, leading innovation at Viridios Capital and building AI-native compliance infrastructure for international sustainability programmes.

Today she is a global advisor on digital product identity, chain of custody, Digital Product Passports, EPR policy and MRV for fashion value chains and climate finance projects. She sits on the UN/CEFACT UNTP Supply Chain Working Group — the body defining the technical standards that will underpin Digital Product Passport implementation worldwide — and is Vice-Chair of Landfills2Landmarks, a Ghana-based NGO, where she has been instrumental in designing its traceability platform.

She holds an Executive MBA from London College of Fashion (UAL) and an MA in Fashion Journalism, and is the author of the Human Impact Equivalence Framework®, the proprietary methodology associates are trained in.

03 · The opportunity

An associate model for practitioners who'd rather do the work than chase it

We're building a network of associate consultants to deliver Symolem's work alongside us.

As a Symolem associate, you deliver client engagements under the Symolem name, using Symolem's methodology, on work we bring to you. You don't carry the cost or the risk of business development — we win the clients, scope the engagements, and route the delivery to you. You focus on doing the work well.

In return for operating within our framework, you get three things that are hard to build alone: a pipeline of clients you don't have to find, training and certification in methodologies that make you measurably more capable, and the credibility of delivering under an established brand with a track record across government, NGO and corporate work.

What you'd do

Deliver sustainability and compliance engagements — ESPR and Digital Product Passport readiness, impact measurement and MRV, regulatory gap analysis, and circular strategy — to Symolem's clients and to Symolem's standard. You'd be trained in our method first, then matched to engagements that fit your expertise, with the scope, deliverables and time commitment agreed up front for each one.

What we ask

That you deliver to the Symolem method and quality bar; that on these engagements you operate under the Symolem name rather than your own practice; and that you respect the basis the model runs on — the client is Symolem's client and the methodology is Symolem's IP. You're free to keep your own independent work entirely separate; what you don't do is take Symolem's clients or methods into competing work.

04 · Why work this way

Independence without the chase

Going independent usually means trading the security of a salary for freedom — and then spending half that freedom chasing the next client. This model gives you the freedom without the chase.

You earn more as you grow

Your rate isn't fixed to a grade or a band. As you deepen your expertise, build a track record on Symolem engagements and take on more complex work, your day rate rises with you. You're paid for capability, not time served — the better you get, the more you earn, with no ceiling set by an org chart.

You control your own time

You decide which engagements to take and which to pass on. You log the days you're unavailable — holidays, family, other commitments, or simply rest — and we work around them. No leave to request, no permission to ask for, no manager rationing your time off. You build your working life around the rest of your life, and take on as much or as little as suits the year you're having.

There's no lock-in

This isn't employment, and you're never trapped in it. If you're offered a full-time role you want, take it — no notice period to negotiate, no hard feelings. The only thing we ask is that the Symolem clients you were introduced to through us stay Symolem clients. Beyond that, your independence is entirely your own.

You skip the part everyone hates

For most independents, a third of working life disappears into unpaid business development — proposals, pitches, networking, quoting. We carry all of it. You don't write a proposal you don't get paid for or sit through a pitch that goes nowhere. You get scoped, agreed work and you spend your time delivering it.

You deliver under a name that opens doors

You work under the Symolem brand and its track record — credentials spanning the Zayed Sustainability Prize, ClimatePartner, UN-accredited NGO work and formal submissions to government. That's credibility most independents take years to build alone, and it's behind you from day one.

Your capability compounds

You're trained and certified in methodologies you can't get anywhere else — the START framework, the 6M Model, our Digital Product Passport field register, and the Human Impact Equivalence Framework®, Symolem's proprietary, registered methodology for quantifying outcomes in impacted lives. These are tools used on live client work, not theory — methods you apply and get measurably better at. The expertise is yours to keep, across your whole career.

You get range

Working across Symolem's client base means exposure to sectors, regulations and geographies — UK, EU, UAE and beyond — that you'd rarely see inside a single employer or as a solo operator. Every engagement widens what you can do next.

You keep the upside of being independent

You run your own business, set your own structure, and manage your own time and tax affairs as a self-employed professional — with the security of knowing the hardest part, finding the clients, is handled.

05 · How an engagement works

From won client to paid invoice

Every piece of work follows the same simple path, so you always know where you stand before you commit time.

1

We win the client

Symolem sources, pitches and secures the engagement. By the time it reaches you, the client relationship, the scope and the commercial terms are already in place. You carry none of that cost or risk.

2

We offer you the engagement

We match the work to your expertise and offer it to you, with scope, deliverables, estimated days and your day rate set out clearly. You're free to accept or decline — no obligation to take work that doesn't suit you.

3

We confirm the terms in writing

Before any work begins, we issue a short engagement confirmation: what you're delivering, the timeline, the days, your rate and any client-specific requirements. Nothing starts on a handshake.

4

You deliver

You do the work under the Symolem name and method, with our frameworks, templates and support behind you. You're the practitioner; we handle client management, quality oversight and any commercial conversations with the client.

5

You invoice us — not the client

You invoice Symolem for the days you've delivered, at the agreed rate, on the agreed schedule. Your commercial relationship is with Symolem alone; you're never chasing a client for payment.

6

We pay you

We settle your invoices on agreed terms, independent of when the client pays us. You deliver, you invoice, you get paid. For longer engagements, days and invoicing are staged against milestones or monthly, agreed before you start.

06 · The basis we work on

A clear, fair exchange — protected on both sides

The model works because of a simple exchange: we bring the clients, the brand, the methodology and the training; you bring your expertise and deliver to our standard. Two commitments protect that exchange, and both are written into your agreement.

The work and the method stay Symolem's

The clients are Symolem's clients, and the frameworks, templates, tools and deliverables you work with — including the START framework, the 6M Model, the Digital Product Passport field register and the Human Impact Equivalence Framework® — are Symolem's intellectual property, including the work product created during an engagement. You're licensed to use them to deliver Symolem work; they're not yours to take into competing work. Your own independent practice stays entirely separate and entirely yours.

Non-solicitation

For any client you are introduced to or work with through Symolem, you agree not to solicit, approach, or provide competing services to that client — whether directly or through another business — in relation to the services Symolem provides. This applies during your engagement with us and permanently afterwards, and is limited to the specific clients you came to know through Symolem. It does not restrict your right to work freely with any client you bring to your own practice independently of Symolem. This agreement is governed by the law of England and Wales.

The summary, not the contract

The page above is the plain-language basis of the relationship. The binding terms are set out in your Associate Agreement, which you'll review and sign before any work begins.
